Coop Denmark

Ensuring EUDR readiness across organisation and operations for large retail player

Coop is one of Denmark’s leading grocery retailers and the country’s largest democratic company, owned by more than 2 million members and operating ~900 retail stores across Kvickly, SuperBrugsen, Brugsen, and 365discount. In response to the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), Coop partnered with The Footprint Firm to prepare for regulatory readiness and to future-proof their approach to responsible sourcing.

The project

The EUDR, with obligations applying from December 30. 2026, introduces stringent requirements on traceability and deforestation-free supply chains. The project focused on assessing the potential impact of the regulation across Coop’s broad product assortment and operations and supporting the design of Coop’s internal due diligence system. The process was cross-functional and highly collaborative, anchored in Coop’s product quality and sustainability team, and closely aligned with procurement, category, and IT teams.

Our approach

We translated complex legislative requirements into practical, business-oriented solutions. This included mapping product categories and supply chain exposure, identifying high-risk areas, and defining key system and data needs. Following this, we co-developed a roadmap for EUDR implementation, balancing compliance with operational realities — ensuring the solution was not just technically sound but embedded in Coop’s existing ways of working.

The impact

Our work enabled Coop to respond to EUDR requirements in a timely manner. The process strengthened Coop’s sustainable sourcing systems and built internal alignment and knowledge across functions, creating a due diligence setup that is both robust and rooted in Coop’s business model.
